2009-2010 Lady Spartan Basketball PreviewThe Spartan Women's basketball team returns six players from a year ago and has a promising freshman class of six players, giving head coach Ann Williams the best roster depth she has had in several years. Williams begins her 33rd year as head coach at M State, fresh off her 500th career victory last season.
Captain Jess Amann, a sophomore guard from Hawley, is joined by guards Denise Ripplinger from Upsala and Abby Wolden of Underwood, wings Kelsey Steidl from Maple Valley High School in North Dakota and Maria Lindberg from Perham, and post player Kelsey Draper from Morria Area as returning players from last year.
Leading the athletic incoming freshman class are point guards Emily Johnson from Ashby and Heather Gagner from Morris Area High School, wings Whitney Moore from Fergus Falls, Steph Torkildson from Pelican Rapids and Sarah Schlieman from New Ulm, and post player Whitney Swenson from Yellow Medicine East.
"Our strength will be in our depth in position at the perimeter," stated Coach Williams. "We will also have the ability to get up and down the floor with this team and I think our cohesiveness as a team will be another one of our strengths. Where we may be weak is in a lack of post height, which will be more importantly missed as a defensive weapon."
Williams says Rochester, Ridgewater and Central Lakes will be the teams to beat in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference.
Williams will be assisted by Brenda Johnson (19th year), Janice Hendrickson (3rd year) and Jess Price (1st year). |
