Christensen named BES Director

M State sales and marketing instructor Bryan Christensen has been named director of the college's Business & Entrepreneurial Services, which is located on the Detroit Lakes campus and involved in business incubators in five area communities.

Prior to joining M State, he was director of safety and security for United Tribes Technical College and a criminal justice instructor for Rasmussen College. He is also a marketer for two family businesses and has been involved in instruction for both BES and M State's Custom Training Services.

He earned an AAS in computer and networking from M State, a bachelor's degree in management from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from the University of Mary and Southwest State University.

"We're excited to have Bryan join the BES group," said G.L. Tucker, dean of CTS and BES. "His experience with instruction and family businesses fits with our goal of looking for additional synergies between BES and all areas of M State."

BES provides both credit-based courses and workshops and training opportunities designed to strengthen new and existing businesses. BES was instrumental in the start-up of incubators in Detroit Lakes and Hawley and it supports The Hive, an innovative incubator marketing agency co-op on the Detroit Lakes campus.

Tucker said BES stakeholders will have the opportunity to be involved in the discussions as a long-range strategy is developed for BES during the coming months.

BES congratulates incubator 'graduate' PharmaMed Automation

Business & Entrepreneurial Service at Minnesota State Community and Technical College congratulates PharmaMed Automation for its recent move from the Hawley business incubator to its new permanent location in the community.

The manufacturing firm, owned by Dustin Hanson, opened in June 2012 in the Hawley incubator, a partnership of M State's Detroit Lakes campus and the city of Hawley.

PharmaMed manufactures engineered material handling and packing automation equipment for medical device and pharmaceutical companies, including conveyer systems, robotic pick-n-place units and product sorters. Hanson, a mechanical engineer, worked for an automation company in Fargo for nine years before opening PharmaMed.

As a tenant in the incubator, located at 407 6th St., Hanson said he benefitted from the opportunity to network with fellow tenants and from the support the incubator provided, including mentoring and business consulting.

"In the last three months, the business has grown tremendously," Hanson said, "and the BES incubator space has helped a lot with this." PharmaMed recently had a display at the Pack Expo in Las Vegas, and growing sales have Hanson planning to hire a mechanical engineer or designer, an electrical engineer and an automation technician.

The company's new facility is located at 112 15th St. S, off Highway 10 on the city's south side.

The Hawley incubator is one of two incubators operated by BES to foster new business growth and expand economic development opportunities in the region.
