Register for an Orientation/Registration Session

All new students at M State are required to attend an orientation and registration event. The orientation event will allow you to meet current employees and students, learn about important policies and procedures, and register for courses.

Assessment Test

The next preparation step for registration is determining whether or not we have English, Math and Reading placement information for you. The data we use for placement information includes:

Accuplacer Assessment Test Scores
ACT Test Scores
Transfer course work in English or Math

Have you completed an Accuplacer assessment or received a waiver based on course work at a previous institution or ACT scores?

What is the Accuplacer Assessment?

It is an online assessment that will evaluate your academic abilities in reading, writing and mathematics. The Accuplacer Assessment is not a pass/fail test - we want our students to be successful in the classroom. This instrument allows us to place you in appropriate level coursework. This assessment is not timed; so please feel free to take as much time as you need.

Do I have to take the Accuplacer Assessment?

All or part of the assessment requirement may be waived if you have successfully completed college-level English and/or math courses at another college or university.

Also, you do not need to take the assessment if you have taken the ACT exam and scored in the ranges listed below:

A score of (18) in reading
A score of (18) writing
A score of (23) in mathematics

If you do not have an ACT score and you have not attended another college or university, you will be required to take the Accuplacer Assessment.

What if my ACT scores are below 18 in reading/writing and 23 in mathematics?

If you feel the ACT accurately reflects your academic ability, you can submit your ACT scores and you will be placed in a developmental course(s).

Is there a fee to take the Accuplacer Assessment?

The first time M State students take the assessment, there is no charge. If you determine you would like to re-take the assessment, there is a $10 fee.

You can re-take it one time.

Can I take the placement test closer to home?

Most Minnesota community and/or technical colleges give the Accuplacer assessment. All M State locations (Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Moorhead and Wadena) also use the same assessment. To inquire about taking the assessment at another location, visit www.mnscu.edu for college contact information.
