Human Resources

M State offers two degree options that will prepare you for a career or for further study in the rewarding and growing field of human resources. We offer the only human resources associate degree programs in Minnesota that can be completed online, on our Moorhead campus or as a combination of online and on-campus courses.

Human resources professionals provide support to their companies and their employees in a variety of ways including communication with employees, data record keeping, administration of policies, employer/labor relations, recruiting and training new employees, and administration of wages and benefits.

Graduates of our Human Resources AAS degree program are prepared to be hired in entry- and mid-level positions as a human relations specialist. The Human Resources AS degree program is designed for students intending to transfer to four-year colleges and universities and continue their education in human resources. Both programs are 60 credits.

  • Federal, state and local employment regulationsand recordkeeping requirements
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills including interviewing, negotiation, presentation and training
  • Development and administration of ethical policies and procedures related to employment processes including employee selection, termination, performance evaluation, compensation, forecasting and benefit administration
  • Composition of business correspondence
  • Development and coordination of safety, health and security programs
  • Use of computer technology for business applications
  • Use of human relations knowledge and skills to solve human resource problems

M State’s student HR chapter wins national recognition

Members of the Student Human Resource Organization on Minnesota State Community and Technical College's Moorhead campus have earned national recognition for their chapter's activities.

SHRO received the national Society for Human Resource Management's 2015-16 Merit Award for providing exceptional growth and development opportunities to members of the student chapter. The chapter's advisor is M State's HR instructor, Loren Haagenson.

SHRO's activities during the past year included:

  • · Partnering with Business Professionals of America in a successful shoe drive for Dress for Success
  • · Raising funds for an HR student scholarship
  • · Volunteering with M State Career Services at the campus job fair
  • · Attending a state HR student conference

The mission of the 19-member chapter includes introducing students to opportunities in the field of human resources and keeping students informed of developments in the profession. Members also have an opportunity to network with human resource professionals.

In recognition of its achievements, M State's SHRO chapter received a digital logo for use in communications and will be recognized in SHRM's publications and at its conferences.

The national organization is the largest in the world devoted to human resource management, representing more than 275,000 professional and 20,000 student members in more than 160 countries.

Career opportunities

Graduates of M State's Human Resources program will have employment opportunities as Human Resources assistants.

Description: Compile and keep personnel records. Record data for each employee, such as address, weekly earnings, absences, amount of sales or production, supervisory reports, and date of and reason for termination. May prepare reports for employment records, file employment records, or search employee files and furnish information to authorized persons.
