M State's Associate in Fine Arts in Music, offered on our Fergus Falls campus, provides both a vocal and instrumental focus. Graduates can seamlessly transfer and continue work on a four-year music degree, working toward careers in musical performance, composition, music education, music therapy or music business and industry.
Our exceptional music facilities include an instrumental and choral rehearsal hall, music composition computer lab, piano studios and Steinway performance grand piano. Our talented music directors have led groups to national distinction, including performances at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Music Associate in Fine Arts (AFA)

The Associate in Fine Arts in Music is designed to provide a means for music students to pursue a path with seamless transition to a four-year music degree and to be best prepared for a degree and/or career in music. The AFA emphasizes a fine arts focus within a discipline area of study and offers students preparation for fine arts study at the university level. The AFA in Music at M State allows for a choral or instrumental emphasis and ensures that students will have the necessary coursework to prepare for advanced studies in music.
M State's Music program has an articulation agreement with Southwest State University. Graduates from M State's program can transfer seamlessly into Southwest State's bachelor degree program's in Music.
Articulation agreements ensure that students completing specified coursework or degree programs at M State will transfer into designated programs at partner universities/colleges per the terms of the agreement. This cooperative effort eliminates or minimizes the questions and confusion that sometimes accompany transfer and allows our students to be confident that their degree from M State will satisfy a substantive portion of the completion requirements for the bachelor's degree at the university/college they will be attending.
