Spring Willow

By: Charles Beck

This series of four Charles Beck woodcuts are abstract works in which symmetry is a dominant formal element. In abstract art, the forms are simplified, but there is still identifiable subject matter. In each print in the series, the motif of the willow tree is readily recognizable. The billowing tree in each highly textured print remains constant, while the seasonal palette changes, symbolizing subtle aspects of nature's cycles of regeneration and renewal. Colors are both warm and cool, with yellow tones for spring, green for summer, burnt sienna for fall, and rose for winter. The soft tones speak to the gentle side of nature, evoking feelings of serenity and order. A statement from Charles Beck appropriately addresses the subject matter in these nature works: 'Nature is all about us. The never-ending cycle of the seasons stimulates the senses. One must only look—to experience the patterns, textures, and colors of the land and sky, the hills and woods, the weeds and flowers. My hope is that in a small way I have helped open the eyes of others to this diversity, to this mystery.'
