MLT2315 – Immunology pdf

Description: This course is intended for Medical Laboratory Technician students and other health professionals. Topics covered include principles of antigens, antibodies and their combination in health, disease and serological laboratory procedures. The course emphasizes testing and disease diagnosis of disorders such as hepatitis, acquired immune deficiency syndrome, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Lyme disease, syphilis, infectious mononucleosis and streptococcal infections.
Prerequisites: MLT1215 AND MLT1115
OR
ZOO1122 AND MLT1113 AND MLT1114
Corequisites: (None)
Competencies:
  1. Identify the differences between innate and adaptive immunity.
  2. Identify the differences and similarities in humoral and cell-mediated immunity.
  3. Characterize the five immunoglobulin structures and functions.
  4. Identify the cause and effect of antigen immunogenicity.
  5. Perform basic immunological tests to detect antibody-antigen complexes used to identify disease.
  6. Interpret immunological test results seen in health and disease.
  7. Identify the causes and effects of hypersensitivity, autoimmune disease and transplantation rejection.
  8. Demonstrate standard safety practices when handling, collecting and/or analyzing specimens.
