RADT2244 – Legal and Ethical Issues in Radiologic Technology pdf

Description: Content is designed to provide a fundamental background in ethics. The historical and philosophical basis of ethics as well as the elements of ethical behavior will be discussed. The student will examine a variety of ethical issues and dilemmas found in clinical practice. An introduction to legal terminology, concepts and principles will also be presented. Topics will include misconduct, malpractice, legal and professional standards and the ASRT scope of practice. The importance of proper documentation and informed consent is emphasized.

  1. Explore legal and ethical foundations.
  2. Describe specialized standards of behavior for the healing arts as a continuum.
  3. Describe the moral, social and cultural basis of ethics.
  4. Explain the role of ethical behavior in health care delivery.
  5. Differentiate between empathetic and sympathetic rapport.
  6. Explain concepts of personal honesty, integrity, accountability, competence and compassion as ethical imperatives in health care.
  7. List legal/professional standards and their relationship to practice in health professions.
  8. Explore ethical issues in health care.
  9. Employ a basic system of examination, clarification, determination of alternatives and decision-making in addressing ethical questions.
  10. Explain the legal implications of professional liability, malpractice, professional negligence/carelessness and other legal doctrines applicable to professional practice.
  11. Describe the importance of accurate, complete, and correct methods of documentation as a legal/ethical imperative.
  12. Explain select concepts embodied in principles of patients' rights, the doctorine of informed consent and other issues related to patient rights.
  13. Explain specific legal terms, principles and laws.
  14. Describe the scope of practice for radiography, the elements that comprise it and the responsibilities of the radiographer.
