Spartans Win Fourth Consecutive Region XIII and MCAC Championships
M State Athletics offer exciting action for players and spectators in eight National Junior College Athletic Association sports.

The M State Spartan Athletic Department recognized the individual and team accomplishments of its student athletes at the 41st All Sports Banquet on May 5 on the Fergus Falls campus.
Student Athletes of the Year
Maria Johnson, a sophomore from Pelican Rapids, was named Female Student Athlete of the Year. Maria participated in women's basketball and softball during her freshman and sophomore years and was a two-year Academic Athlete. She was named to the MCAC Honorable Mention All Division basketball team as a freshman, and as a sophomore Maria was named second team All Division for basketball and first team All Division for softball.
Peter Gaustad, a sophomore and 2012 graduate of Fergus Falls High School, was honored as the Male Student Athlete of the Year. He combined strong academic success with success on the baseball field and earned numerous baseball awards during his two-year career with the Spartans including MCAC pitcher of the week, MCAC player of the week, NJCAA pitcher of the week, Southern Division MCAC first team, All MCAC first team and Region XIII first team. He is captain of the 2014 squad.
The Coaches Award recognizes the students who best exemplify Spartan Pride and exhibit the dedication and hard work that make M State a great place to work and participate in athletics. Winners are selected by Spartan athletic coaches. This year's recipients are Donna Ripplinger and Alvin Freeman.
Donna was recognized for her willingness to help whenever needed and for her positive personality. "She always stops by the coaches' offices to see if there is anything that needs to be done," the coaches wrote. "Her attitude and work ethic are appreciated in the Athletic Department."
Alvin has worked for the football and softball programs and in concessions for volleyball and basketball. "He has a great work ethic and a fun personality and is definitely deserving of this award," according to the coaches.
Four M State student athletes have been recognized by the National Junior College Athletic Association for their academic achievements during the 2012-13 academic year.
Spartan football player Wendlin Berger (Stanton, N.D.), a freshman, received the Superior Academic Achievement Award for athletes with GPAs between 3.8 and 3.99.
Andrea Christenson (Fergus Falls), Rhoda Christenson (Fergus Falls) and Christine Moenkedick (Verndale) received the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award with GPAs between 3.6 and 3.79.
Andrea Christenson competed for the Spartans in volleyball, and Rhoda Christenson was a member of the Spartan basketball team. Moenkedick played volleyball, basketball and softball for M State. All three graduated from M State in May.
Moenkedick and Gervais Named Spartan Student Athletes of the Year
The M State Spartan athletic department held its 40th All Sports Banquet on May 6 in Legacy Hall on the Fergus Falls campus. This event recognizes the individual and team accomplishments of the Spartan athletic teams.
Female Student Athlete of the Year - Christine Moenkedick
Christine is a sophomore from Verndale and graduated from Bertha-Hewitt High School. She played volleyball and softball during her freshman year and participated in volleyball, basketball and softball this year. For the 2012 volleyball season, she was named to the Honorable Mention All-American Team, Second Team All-State, and First Team All-Division. She was also Player of the Week in week two. As a freshman she was selected Second Team All-Division. In softball she was selected Second Team All-Division during her freshman year. Christine will graduate from M State this spring and plans to attend M State in Moorhead in the Dental Hygiene program.
Male Student Athlete of the Year - Lucas Gervais
Lucas is a sophomore from Fergus Falls and has played golf at M State for two years. In the fall, Lucas led the Spartans to their second consecutive MCAC and Region 13 championships. At the same event, he was crowned the individual champion, beating the field by an eight-shot margin. He won medalist honors at five different events during the season. Lucas and the Spartans will return to New York in June to defend their NJCAA Division 3 National Championship, where Lucas was named First Team All-American a year ago. Lucas plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Omaha on a golf scholarship.
The Spartans also awarded their Coaches Awards, presented to one male and one female who demonstrate what it takes to be a Spartan.
The female Coaches Award went to sophomore Megan Cole, a sophomore from New York Mills who participated in basketball and softball.
The male Coaches Award went to Arne Robertson. Arne is not a student athlete but attends almost every home game, shoots video and takes pictures for the M State website.
