Lady Spartans to Play in National Tournament!

Congratulations to the Lady Spartan volleyball team, which defeated the Ridgewater College Warriors - the reigning national champion and No. 2-ranked team in the nation - to win the Region 13 title and advance to the national tournament in November.

The regional tournament was Oct. 26-27 in Willmar. On Friday, the Lady Spartans defeated Rochester Community and Technical College in five sets to advance to the finals against the Ridgewater host team, which won national titles in 2010 and 2011 and went undefeated in Southern Division play this year.

The Lady Spartans lost 3-0 at home and 3-1 at Ridgewater during the season but improved as the season progressed. It was a battle as the match went to five sets, with the Lady Spartans finally winning in the fifth set 15-10.

The victory sends the Lady Spartans, head coach Terri Strom and assistant coach Erika Westby to the national tournament Nov. 9-10 in Rochester. The Lady Spartans last played in the national tournament under Ann Williams in 2004.

Terri Strom was named the Region 13 Coach of the Year. Gretchen Freed, Cheyanne O'Neal and Andrea Christenson were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Spartan Athletic Department thanks all who support our athletic programs and student athletes. Congratulations and good luck to the Lady Spartan volleyball team!
