Steve King

Steve King is in his seventh year as the head coach of the Spartans. He graduated from Eagle Bend High School in 1983 and played two years for the Fergus Falls Community College Spartans, where he was a captain and named the most valuable player of the 1984 team. Steve was an assistant coach for the Spartans for 15 years, including 14 as the defensive coordinator, before going to Itasca Community College for the 2006 season, compiling a 3-6 record. From 1994 to 1999 Steve was the head baseball coach and the defensive coordinator at the University of Minnesota Crookston. He and his wife, Marci, have four children: Joel, Marshall, Olivia and Levi.

Joe Barfknecht: Defensive Line

Joe Barfknecht returns for his 10th year as an assistant to Steve King. Joe spent the previous six years as the defensive coordinator and last year moved to the offensive side of the ball, working the offensive line and as co-offensive coordinator. Joe graduated from high school in 2000 and played two years for the Spartans. He was a member of the 2001 state championship team and received first-team all-division and all-region honors. He also received the Spartan Spirit Award his sophomore year. Joe coached defensive line for the Spartans during the '04 and '05 seasons and was at Itasca Community College with Coach Steve King for the '06 season. Joe and his wife, Kendra, have a daughter, Mikah.

Zach Stich: Quarterbacks and Running Backs

Fergus Falls native and former Spartan Zach Stich returns for his sixth year as M State's offensive coach and his third year as offensive coordinator. Zach played for the Spartans in 2004 as an offensive lineman and running back. He and the offensive line coach, Randy Elenberger, recently developed the new Spartan offensive playbook. Zach graduated from Bemidji State University with a degree in history and is currently taking graduate-level courses at Southwest Minnesota State University. Zach is married to Claire, also an M State alum, and they have one son, Jared.

Randy Elenberger: Offensive Line

Randy graduated in 1998 from high school in Milnor, ND, where he was an all-conference, all-region middle linebacker. He started his college career at Concordia College and graduated from North Dakota State University with a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in Leadership in Physical Education and Sport. In 2012-13 he was the running backs coach at Valley City State University, which finished the season with a 7-3 record and final NAJA season poll ranking of 24. He previously was an assistant coach at Davies High School in Fargo, where he worked with the offensive and defensive lines and the long snappers. Randy and his wife, Katie, have two daughters, Aly and Aubrey, and live in Moorhead.

Dave Monson: Community Volunteer

Dave's commitment to Spartan football began back in 1979 as a defensive back and continues to this day as a special assistant to the football program. He has coached almost every position on the field and was the defensive coordinator of the 1983 squad. After his Fergus Falls playing days, Dave played two years at Southwest State University. Dave is a native of Moorhead and graduated from Oak Grove Lutheran High School. Dave and his wife, Gina, have two children, Ana Grace and Jacob.

Nick Sorum: Wide Receivers

Nick is in his fifth year of coaching for the Spartans. He is a 2006 graduate of Pelican Rapids High School and played for the Spartans in 2008.
