Jason Retzlaff is in his 13th season as head coach of the Spartan golf team. Under his leadership, the Spartans have become a national power on the NJCAA golf scene, finishing in the top five nationally in five consecutive seasons.
In the 2011-12 season, the Spartans won the NJCAA Division III Men's National Championship by 18 strokes. A year ago, the Spartans finished 3rd in the nation. The Spartans also won five straight Men's MCAC and Region XIII championships. Retzlaff has been named the MCAC and Region XIII Coach of the Year five times and in 2012 was named the NJCAA Division III National Coach of the Tournament.
Retzlaff has coached 24 men and women who have competed at the national level, including seven All-Americans. In the last three seasons, the Spartans have had six players move on to four-year golf programs, including three at the Division I level.
A Spartan alumnus, he received his Associate of Arts degree at M State and graduated with bachelor's and master's degrees from North Dakota State University. Retzlaff resides in Fergus Falls with his wife, Stephanie, and son Charlie.
Jeff Haukos is in his 12th year as assistant golf coach for the Spartans. His golf resume includes competing for Fergus Falls High School in 1975.
He spent 21 years in the U.S. Navy as a cryptologist and returned to Fergus Falls to continue his education after retiring from the Navy in 2001. Haukos was a member of the 2002 and 2004 Spartan golf teams and was awarded the Spirit Award by his teammates.
He has been an integral part of the program's success throughout the years, and his love of golf and desire to work with young people have made him an indispensable part of the Spartan golf program.
Haukos is employed as an information technology specialist at M State.
Adam Evavold is in his third year as an assistant golf coach for the Spartans. He grew up playing golf in Fergus Falls and was a four-year letter winner for the Fergus Falls High School golf team.
After earning his bachelor's degree in business administration from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2009, Evavold worked as the assistant golf pro for Pebble Lake Golf Club for two seasons, expanding his knowledge of the game and gaining experience in swing instruction. He hopes to be able to pass on this knowledge and experience to young players and help them reach the next level of competition.
Evavold currently works as the operations manager for Lakes Area Community Healthplan in Fergus Falls, where he lives with his wife, Kelsey.
