Description

This course is the laboratory component of Diagnostic Microbiology that includes basic fundamental concepts such as the analytical principles, techniques and correlation of results related to diagnostic microbiology. This course covers basic techniques including reasons for specimen rejection, identification of normal flora and pathogens, morphology, classification and culturing of bacteria, identification of bacterial unknowns, fungi and parasites.

Competencies

  1. Prepare and perform quality control methods.
  2. Perform diagnostic microbiology techniques such as culture, staining techniques and biochemical tests to identify known and unknown microorganisms.
  3. Identify various fungi from patient specimens and/or prepared specimens.
  4. Identify normal flora and pathogenic bacteria from patient specimens and/or prepared specimens.
  5. Identify various parasites from patient specimens and/or prepared specimens.
  6. Evaluate specimen quality and acceptability.
  7. Demonstrate laboratory safety and use of Standard Precautions.
