The Discover Healthcare Careers Mobile Unit travels to schools, employment centers and other organizations and events around the region to provide engaging, hands-on learning activities and spread the word about high-wage, high-demand careers available within the field of healthcare. The unit is made possible through a U.S. Department of Labor grant and a partnership between M State and Central Lakes College (CLC).

Whether you’re a high school student making decisions about your future or an adult seeking a new career or career advancement, the mobile unit offers opportunities to try your hand at real-world medical procedures, get answers to healthcare and career questions, and learn about related degree programs at M State and CLC.

Hands-on healthcare activities

The mobile unit offers fun, safe and interactive healthcare simulations that let you:

  • Draw blood. Practice venipuncture, a skill used by nurses, phlebotomists and many other healthcare professionals, on realistic patient models.
  • Inject medicine. Administer injections into muscle tissue, and just beneath the skin’s surface, using lifelike tools and models.
  • See germs glow. Use a special oil and UV light to reveal “glowing germs” on your hands and nearby surfaces to see for yourself why proper washing is so important.
  • Staple skin. Close wounds with surgical staples in a realistic simulation experience.
  • Take a 360° VR tour of the body. Adventure through a highly detailed 3D tour of the human body, using virtual reality to rotate around, interact with and dissect internal organs, tissues and systems.
  • Make a 3D mouth model. Mix and pour dental plaster into molds to make 3D models of teeth and gums.
  • Determine blood types. Learn lab techniques and the principles of blood compatibility.
  • Perform CPR and other lifesaving techniques, palpate pulses, take a blood pressure reading, listen to heart and lung sounds and more!

Invite the mobile unit to your school, organization or event

M State and CLC employees are available to lead activities for your organization's students, members or other individuals seeking career information, career advancement or a new career in healthcare at no cost to you.

  • Activities can take place inside or just outside the mobile unit.
  • Activities can be brought into a classroom setting.
  • Participants are free to choose which hands-on activities they'd like to try.
