Description

This course covers the methodology of criminal investigations from preliminary investigation to court proceedings. It also covers evidence recognition, collection and preservation. Police reporting relevant to investigations is also covered, along with all Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board learning objectives relating to investigation of crime.

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the steps and considerations necessary to conduct a criminal investigation.
  2. Determine that criminal investigation is both an art and a science.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the needs and responsibilities of a preliminary investigation.
  4. Recognize the role of uniformed officers in the successful resolution of crime.
  5. Recognize the role of investigators in the successful resolution of crime.
  6. Conclude that criminal investigation as a law enforcement activity is conducted within the framework of the Constitution and the practices of a free society.
  7. Recognize issues related to identification, concealment and the physical effects of controlled substances.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of domestic family abuse investigation techniques.
  9. Recognize how community policing philosophy can enhance the successful investigation of crime.
