Description

This course includes an orientation to the history of dentistry, educational requirements, credentialing opportunities and professional associations for dental and allied dental careers. The student is provided with instruction in the use of dental equipment, instruments and supplies; principles of four-handed dentistry; concepts of infection control and instrument recirculation; management of medical and dental emergencies; and procedures related to oral diagnosis, preventive dentistry and restorative dentistry.

  3. Perform sterilization and disinfection methods.
  4. Assemble basic exam procedure set-up.
  5. Identify basic concepts of four-handed dentistry.
  6. Employ oral evacuation methods on dexter and peers.
  7. Formulate post-operative instructions.
  8. Assist for various dental procedures while employing four-handed dentistry with student partner.
  9. Demonstrate patient and dental team positioning.
  10. Identify cavity classifications.
  11. Identify anterior and posterior restorative procedures.
  12. Demonstrate dental charting ability using symbols and systems.
  13. Perform instrument transfer techniques.
  14. Discuss emergency needs of patients.

  16. Demonstrate operation, care and maintenance of dental equipment.
  17. Analyze the evolution of the dental assistant.
