Description
This course introduces the student to dental hygiene with emphasis on theory of preventative dentistry, OSHA standards, disinfectant/sterilants, formation of plaque and calculus, patient assessment and an introduction to the caries process and periodontal assessment.
Competencies
- Define dental hygiene care and types of services by correctly defining preventative, educational, and therapeutic services of a dental hygienist.
- Describe the purpose and application of the dental hygiene process of care, ethics, and core values.
- Describe infection and exposure control for clinical procedures including instrument recycling, sterilization, disinfection, and patient preparation.
- Describe the process of transmissible diseases.
- Describe proper record keeping and charting.
- Describe the proper techniques and recording of vital signs and medical conditions affecting them.
- Describe the proper techniques and terminology for extraoral and intraoral examination.
- Describe the dental examination including periodontal and dental structures.
- Describe oral disease development and contributing factors.
- Describe biofilm, soft deposits, calculus, and dental stain development and composition.
