Equity and Inclusion

M State empowers students, faculty, staff and administrators to explore a deeper understanding of and respect for diversity in its many forms. That extends to everyone regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, physical ability and national or regional origin.

  • We assist in cultivating campus understanding of diversity and inclusion.
  • We collaborate with students, faculty, staff and administrators to develop programs that educate and foster an inclusive and welcoming environment across our campuses.

Learn about diversity

  1. Be open about differences - Share how your background has influenced you and encourage others to do the same
  2. Ask questions - Ask respectfully if you have a question.
  3. Encourage questions - Be open to questions about the things that make you different and ask questions in return.
  4. Develop friendships - Sharing experiences and asking questions is a great way to develop new friendships.
  5. See the individual - Understand that each person is an individual and cannot be expected to speak for his or her culture. Do not assume everyone within a culture shares the same beliefs and experiences.

Diversity and equity plan

Minnesota State Community and Technical College is developing an institutional diversity and equity plan as part of the Minnesota State System's Charting the Future Initiative. Minnesota State has directed each college and university to develop a plan that will enable campuses to effectively increase diversity for employees and students at all levels of the institution, close the opportunity gap for students, and meet the needs of its economic region.

Equity and Diversity at Minnesota State System

The Equity and Diversity Division's purpose is to provide quality services to and support for the institutions and offices of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. The division focuses on policies and services designed to foster a diverse faculty, staff and student body.

Under the direction of the chancellor, the division is responsible for managing and coordinating the policies, procedures and programs that govern affirmative action, diversity and equal opportunity. The division consults, advises, trains and provides policy development in the areas of non-discrimination investigations, diversity, multiculturalism and affirmative action.

The Equity and Diversity Division also engages in strategic and limited outreach to business, community and civic and educational organizations with most of the effort going to support campuses.

Safe Zone program

The Safe Zone program consists of interactive trainings where participants will learn about the LGBTQ+ community, campus resources, the importance of inclusive language and creating safe spaces, and how to be a supportive advocate and ally for LGBTQ+ social justice and equality. The program is open to Minnesota State University-Moorhead employees.
