2024 Cancer Care Conference PowerPoint
Designed for healthcare professionals, the 2024 conference provided proactive approaches to cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment related to oral cancers, cervical and ovarian cancer and lung cancer. Information was shared on cancer treatment outcomes in the community and the importance of end-of-life planning.
Objectives
Attendees who completed the conference were prepared to:
- Identify innovative research and educational programs to improve the experience and outcomes of patients and caregivers across the continuum of cancer care.
- Review clinical practice updates in screening, diagnosis and treatment of HPV and oral cancers, cervical and ovarian cancers, and lung cancer.
- Apply proactive approaches to end-of-life planning and care.
- Analyze community health needs related to proactive screening, diagnosis and treatment of HPV and oral cancers, cervical and ovarian cancers, and lung cancer.
- Examine healthcare professionals lived experiences supporting their clients and patients through various stages of the cancer control continuum, including etiology, prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and end of life.
- Develop a better understanding of cancer treatment outcomes in communities.
- Examine healthcare provider shortcomings throughout the continuum of cancer care as it relates to HPV and oral cancers, cervical and ovarian cancers, lung cancer and end-of-life planning.
- Assess and emphasize the interfaces between providers, providers and patients, and healthcare organizations.
- Empower clients and patients to prevent cancer and become more active participants before, during and beyond cancer treatment.
Nancy Franke Wilson has been an independent consultant in the areas of public policy, communications and organizational development with government and nonprofit organizations for over 20 years.
She holds a Master of Science in Health Science & Public Administration, is a past President of the Minnesota Public Health Association, has served on numerous boards, including the Minnesota Board of Rural Health and Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and has served on the Planning Commission for the City of Plymouth, Minn. She is a prolific public speaker and trainer, having been a trainer/facilitator for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety Institute for several years.
She currently serves as the Executive Director of the Minnesota Oral Health Coalition, or MOHC. The MOHC is a statewide, nonprofit organization aimed at supporting the Minnesota State Oral Health Plan and increasing awareness, education and access for optimal oral health.
She is married and has two daughters, and is a crazy pug mom to Louis and Charlemagne. She has a variety of hobbies and interests, including yoga, anything related to health and plant-based eating, wine tasting and travel, and elle est également étudiante française (she is also a French student).
As a certified nurse midwife, Tanya Baity (she/her) provides care during pregnancy, childbirth, and after delivery. She also sees patients for pap tests, birth control, menopause and other common gynecological needs. She believes in an integrative approach to medicine, including appropriate complementary, alternative and natural healthcare treatments along with conventional medicine. She has a special clinical interest in LGBTQIA healthcare and believes that people can be healthy in bodies of all sizes.
She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Bethel University in St. Paul. She speaks Spanish fluently and spent one semester studying medical Spanish in Antigua, Guatemala. She obtained her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) as a Certified Nurse Midwife from Frontier Nursing University in Kentucky.
When she isn’t working, she enjoys spending time with her family and dog, reading, traveling, arts and crafts, and spending time in nature.
Dr. Tracie Mallberg is the medical director for both Hospice of the Red River Valley and House Calls-Red River Healthcare, a home-based primary care program. Both are based in Fargo but extend care to patients across much of North Dakota and Northwest Minnesota. She was born and raised in rural North Dakota and she and her husband, Steve Sylvester, raised their eight children in Fargo.
She is a graduate of the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine. She owned and operated an independent family practice clinic, LilyCare, in West Fargo for over five years, and in 2010 she was named Woman of the Year in Medicine. When her son suffered a traumatic brain injury as the result of a tragic accident, her career pivoted to allow for participation in her son’s recovery and, in 2013, she joined the VA Medical Center’s Emergency Department.
She joined Hospice of the Red River Valley in 2017 after her father died of cancer and she was able to see, firsthand, the value of hospice care at the end of life. In 2019, she was pivotal in the development of House Calls, the first home-based primary care program in North Dakota, now serving over 500 patients.
As a daughter, wife, mother, teacher and physician, she is passionate about bringing people’s needs and wishes to the center of healthcare.
Charlotte Johnson is a senior oncology social worker for Sanford Health at Roger Maris Cancer Center, specializing in bone marrow transplants and head and neck cancers. She holds master's degrees in social work and in human services, with a concentration in healthcare administration.
She has lived in many different states throughout the country and has a unique 25-year background of experience in palliative care/end-of-life care, Alzheimer’s disease, refugee and immigration services, hospital case management, and teaching as an adjunct instructor at Northern Arizona University.
She serves as a certified death doula and is passionate about ensuring individuals and their families are comfortable talking about end-of-life care and decisions. She is an advocate for anyone she encounters and is eager to make an impact. In her leisure time, she enjoys photography, karaoke, and, most of all, aggravating her husband.
