There is no separate application for this grant. Accounting students gathered to assemble care kits

Accounting students use skills to benefit the homeless

One hundred homeless men and women will get personal care kits, thanks to a class project by accounting students on the Moorhead campus of Minnesota State Community and Technical College.

Students started the process of manufacturing the kits by calculating fixed and variable costs, contribution margins, a break-even analysis, projected budgets and variance analysis.

The three-day project in Nancy Stigen's Managerial Accounting course wrapped up Nov. 18 when six teams of students gathered to assemble the kits, which include socks, tissues, hand warmers, wash cloth, bar of soap, toothbrush and toothpaste. The kits were delivered to the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality, a charity that provides meals, rooms and a food pantry to meet the needs of an increasing homeless population in the Fargo Moorhead area.

Assistance with donations for the project came from the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel - Moorhead, the Microtel Inn of Moorhead and several M State student organizations, including Business Professionals of America, Student American Dental Hygienists Association and African Student Association.
