Description
In this course, students work in a licensed school salon to meet requirements stipulated by the State Board of Cosmetology. The course includes instruction in applied science and skills in shampooing, scalp and hair conditioning, hair design and shaping, chemical hair control, hair coloring, hair styling, skin care and facials, makeup, waxing, manicuring and nail care. Each student is required to complete a specific minimum number of clinical exercises, as well as a minimum number of clinical hours, to fulfill requirements set by the State Board of Cosmetology.
Competencies
- Assess client needs and conduct a successful client consultation.
- Apply Minnesota laws and rules to everyday practice.
- Execute proper sanitation and disinfection practices, including the use of personal protective equipment.
- Conduct shampoo services and conditioning treatments, including scalp and hair analysis.
- Demonstrate the appropriate draping for desired salon services.
- Perform balanced haircuts following established guidelines.
- Create smooth, balanced thermal and blow-dry styles for different hair textures and densities.
- Conduct hair foil applications using both weave and slice techniques.
- Demonstrate single-process color services, including virgin and retouch applications.
- Perform facial treatments, including cleansing, skin analysis, exfoliation, comedone extraction, mask, toner and moisturizer.
- Perform thio and sodium hydroxide relaxers using virgin and retouch applications.
- Demonstrate perm sectioning, wrapping and chemical applications.
- Complete makeup applications using single service products to result in a balanced and blended final contour.
- Implement proper application and removal of hard and soft wax to produce uniform and balanced eyebrows.
- Apply an appropriate length and diameter eyelash extension to the natural lash, resulting in separated, balanced lashes.
- Complete manicure and pedicure services, including skin softening, nail shaping, cuticle detailing, massage and polish applications.
- Demonstrate artificial nail procedures, including tips with acrylic overlay, sculpting and gel applications, resulting in smooth, balanced and uniform shape.
- Execute safe artificial nail removal to ensure the natural nail and skin are unharmed.
- Perform skin analysis to determine contraindications prior to performing skin and nail services.
- Demonstrate the appropriate workstation setup for desired salon services.
