Description

This course will cover the anatomy of the cardiovascular system. Students will learn the cardiac cycle, including event timing, heart and vascular pressure, cardiac chamber quantification, and electrophysiology. Also included in this course is an introduction to the two-dimensional ultrasound appearance of cardiac anatomy, including abnormalities detected by adult transthoracic echocardiography.

Competencies

  1. Describe the basic waveforms of the electrocardiogram (ECG).
  2. Describe the principles of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology.
  3. Describe left ventricular (LV) wall segments, coronary circulation and function.
  4. List methods for the assessment of LV systolic and diastolic function.
  5. Demonstrate how to measure hemodynamics of the heart.
  6. List the timeline and development of cardiac embryology.
  7. List the normal conduction pathway across the heart.
  8. List the normal anatomy of the heart as seen by echocardiography.
  9. Describe the normal cardiac events and timing of the cardiac cycle.
  10. Demonstrate how to measure heart structures by two-dimensional and M-mode modalities.
  11. Demonstrate echocardiographic techniques.
  12. Analyze echocardiography cases in healthy and diseased hearts.
  13. List the echocardiographic methods used to estimate heart and vascular pressures.
