Description
This course introduces students to the organization and management of a fire and emergency services department and the relationship of government agencies to the fire service. Emphasis is placed on fire and emergency service, ethics and leadership from the perspective of the company officer as described in the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) 1021 Fire Officer Professional Qualifications for State Certification for Fire Officer I and Fire Officer II.
Competencies
  1. Demonstrate competency in integrating department policies, procedures and expectations with company operations to accomplish organizational objectives.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the department's organization and its role within local government and the community in which it exists.
  3. Demonstrate an ability to professionally organize and conduct fire prevention inspections.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the department's budgeting and purchasing process.
  5. Conduct emergency scene operations using the Incident Command System.
  6. Preserve an emergency scene for fire investigations and be capable of determining origin and cause.
  7. Recognize the need for effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  8. Identify the importance of ethics in fire and emergency services.
  9. Describe the traits of effective versus ineffective management styles.
