Description

The first responder-level course covers regular and more advanced first aid practices and procedures including extrication and transportation, professional-level CPR, oxygen administration, long bone splinting, blood pressure monitoring, emergency childbirth, patient assessment, backboarding and stress management.

Competencies

  1. Demonstrate appropriate care for life-threatening conditions, such as establishing and maintaining an open airway and providing adequate pulmonary ventilation.
  2. Demonstrate appropriate care for life-threatening conditions, such as controlling external bleeding, dressing and bandaging wounds, and splinting injured extremities.
  3. Perform CPR and external defibrillation (AED).
  4. Recognize and treat signs and symptoms of shock.
  5. Recognize and treat signs and symptoms of medical emergencies, including chest pain, shortness of breath, severe allergic reaction, poisoning and substance abuse, and environmental emergencies.
  6. Demonstrate appropriate care for non-life threatening conditions, such as emergency childbirth.
  7. Demonstrate skills that are essential to quality patient care, such as coping with the psychological stresses on patients, families, colleagues and yourself, verbal and written communications, defensive and emergency driving, maintenance and use of supplies and equipment, and avoiding or coping with medico-legal and ethical problems.
  8. Demonstrate National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician practical skills stations, which include trauma, medical, spinal immobilization-supine patient and airway management.
  9. Demonstrate Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant behavior.
