Description
This course focuses on the care of individual patients with psychiatric and behavioral disorders. Emphasis is placed on common psychiatric and behavioral disorders as well as promoting and maintaining the mental health of individual patients. Principles of pathophysiology, nutrition and pharmacology are applied.

Competencies
- Examine current mental health issues affecting diverse populations.
- Organize data to contribute to established plans of care for individual patients with mental health disorders.
- Demonstrate caring, culturally sensitive, therapeutic communication with individual patients experiencing mental health disorders.
- Analyze potential or actual patient complications and interventions from an established plan of care that address the needs of the individual patient with mental health disorders.
- Interpret ethical and legal implications related to the care of individual patients with mental health disorders.
- Categorize the major classifications of medications, common medications within each classification, potential and actual complications, contraindications and rationales for medication administration for mental health problems.
- Apply knowledge of pharmacology, pathophysiology and nutrition to the care of patients with mental health disorders.
- Provide rationale to support nursing judgments and prioritization of care for individual patients experiencing mental health disorders.
