Description

This course is an introduction to the career of teaching, along with the development of technology skills. Specific variables related to teaching as a profession are explored including professional roles and responsibilities, students, curriculum and the structure of schools. This course is to be taken concurrently with ED 2206.

Competencies

  1. Describe the standards of professional conduct in the Code of Ethics for Minnesota Teachers.
  2. Comprehend the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of the teaching profession.
  3. Show understanding of teachers' and school officials' legal obligations to provide equal educational opportunities, including appropriate education for students with disabilities.
  4. Report on teachers' and school officials' legal obligations to ensure confidentiality, privacy, and due process for students.
  5. Communicate understanding of teachers' and school officials' legal obligations to report known or suspected abuse or neglect.
  6. Create activities that can be used to implement Minnesota learning standards in PreK-12 classrooms.
  7. Demonstrate sensitivity to issues of disability, gender, sexual orientation, and cultural difference.
  8. Appraise how students' social environment, family circumstances, economic conditions, and health may affect learning, and how instructional practices may be adjusted in response to these influences.
  9. Establish an understanding of the interaction of schools with the larger society and the influence of parents, taxpayers, and other educational stakeholders on curriculum, school administration, and education policy.
  10. Examine choice, accountability, inclusion, and other education policy developments and their implications for P-12 teaching and learning.
