Description
This course meets MnTC Goal Areas 2 and 6. This course is an in-depth study of literary texts that fall under the category of horror and/or supernatural fiction. While the focus is on this genre, the course may also address sub-categories of detective fiction, science fiction and fantasy.

- Identify literary elements, terms, and concepts, especially those that relate to the genre of horror fiction.
- Analyze readings that may be comprised of poetry, plays, novels, short stories, creative essays, or any combination of these genres.
- Examine the origins of horror literature, including backgrounds of pioneer authors such as (but not limited to) Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, and H.P. Lovecraft.
- Relate horror and supernatural fiction to their historical contexts.
- Explain how horror and supernatural fiction is critically received and its contribution to the literary world.
- Differentiate between contemporary and historical reactions to the literature.
- Interpret the literature within the framework of contemporary theoretical or historical contexts.
- Construct and write analytical compositions about the readings.
- Participate in small and large group literary discussions.
