Description

This course meets MnTC Goal Areas 2 and 6. This course is an in-depth study of literary texts that fall under the category of horror and/or supernatural fiction. While the focus is on this genre, the course may also address sub-categories of detective fiction, science fiction and fantasy.
Prerequisites

Competencies

  1. Identify literary elements, terms, and concepts, especially those that relate to the genre of horror fiction.
  2. Analyze readings that may be comprised of poetry, plays, novels, short stories, creative essays, or any combination of these genres.
  3. Examine the origins of horror literature, including backgrounds of pioneer authors such as (but not limited to) Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, and H.P. Lovecraft.
  4. Relate horror and supernatural fiction to their historical contexts.
  5. Explain how horror and supernatural fiction is critically received and its contribution to the literary world.
  6. Differentiate between contemporary and historical reactions to the literature.
  7. Interpret the literature within the framework of contemporary theoretical or historical contexts.
  8. Construct and write analytical compositions about the readings.
  9. Participate in small and large group literary discussions.
