Description

This course focuses on the application of legal principles, policies, regulations and standards for the control and use of health information.
Prerequisites

  1. Apply knowledge of the U.S. legal system and legislative processes.
  2. Apply policies, regulations and standards to the management of information.
  3. Recognize the impact of licensure and accreditation standards on health information management policies and procedures.
  4. Apply understanding of the health record life cycle, including retention and destruction.
  5. Define physical, technical, and administrative controls to mitigate the risk of unauthorized access to protected health information.
  6. Appy privacy strategies to health information.
  7. Apply security strategies to health information.
  8. Apply exceptions to privacy legislation to release information for required reporting purposes.
  9. Differentiate between healthcare fraud and abuse as defined in legislation.
  10. Identify required elements for reporting vital statistics and notifiable diseases, abuse and deaths.
