Description

Meets MnTC Goal Areas 2, 6 and 9. This course is an introduction to the topic of ethics. In this course, the following questions are examined: What is ethics? How do we make ethical decisions? Are things that are legally right necessarily right? Should we consider our own interests when making ethical decisions? Are things ethically right simply because God says they are right? If our culture says something is ethically right, does that mean it is ethically right? The course also examines numerous topical ethical issues such as racism, terrorism and censorship.

Competencies

  1. Show an awareness of the variety of ethical philosophies.
  2. Explore the historical context in which these works and ideas were derived.
  3. Critique the ethical theories presented.
  4. Explain how ethical choices are made.
  5. Construct informed reactions to works in the humanities.
  6. Generate and formulate their own ethical beliefs.
  7. Examine ethical issues from multiple perspectives.
  8. Analyze the logical connections among the premises and conclusions of ethical arguments, and implications that follow from them.
  9. Identify the value assumptions made by people, and how they affect our ethical decisions.
