Fire Service Preparation

About this program
The Fire Service Preparation program provides individuals interested in a career in fire service with the basic knowledge and skills to meet International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Proboard certifications and EMT registry requirements. Participants in the Fire Service Preparation program will be actively involved with technical hands-on training to ensure familiarity with all entry-level aspects of fire service. Upon completion of the certificate, students will be eligible for the State of Minnesota firefighter license after employment with a career fire department.
Program outcomes
- Safely respond to emergency incidents.
- Demonstrate proper use of fire department communication equipment.
- Demonstrate proper ventilation techniques.
- Demonstrate techniques for rescuing individuals from vehicles, collapsed structures and confined spaces.
- Demonstrate proper uses of personal protective equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatuses.
- Perform decontamination techniques for emergency personnel, victims and equipment.
- Demonstrate basic lifesaving skills including CPR, bleeding and shock control, response to breathing difficulties, splinting fractures and dislocations, and assessment of medical emergencies.
- Employ proper procedures during a commercial inspection.
- Research applicable fire codes and fire statistics.
- Complete required reports after an emergency incident, inspection and preplan of a facility.
- Demonstrate evidence preservation after a fire to aid in investigation.
- Understand basic components of fire detection, extinguishing methods and fire suppression systems.
