Spartans Men's Basketball is headed to nationals
The M State Spartans Men’s Basketball team is headed to the NJCAA Division III National Tournament after winning the regional championship this past weekend.
With an impressive 29-2 record, the Spartans will travel to Herkimer, New York to compete at the national tournament March 12-15. It will be the first time the team has competed at nationals since the 2002-2003 season.
The team qualified with an 84-62 win over Riverland at the MCAC and Region XIII Championship at Anoka-Ramsey Community College in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. The region title is the seventh in Spartans Men’s Basketball history, and the program’s eighth MCAC title, which ties the record for most titles for a program in league history.
“I’m so proud of this group of young men,” says Head Coach David Cresap. “This Spartans team is not just a group of young men working together, this team is a group of young men who have grown to trust each other. We are not just a team, but have grown into a basketball family.”
“They have accomplished a lot,” he adds, “but the work isn’t finished.”
Cresap was named MCAC Southern Division Coach of the Year.
Foday Sheriff, a sophomore forward for the Spartans, was named MVP of the region championship.
National tournament seedings will be announced Wednesday, March 5 at 2 p.m. A public Send-Off/Selection Show party with players and coaches will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Legacy Hall on M State’s Fergus Falls campus. All are welcome and there is no cost to attend.
