The American Sign Language and Deaf Studies certificate program offers a comprehensive introduction to the language, culture, and history of the American Deaf community. Through this program, students will gain a strong foundation in American Sign Language (ASL) and develop an understanding of the various issues and concerns facing the Deaf community. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for advanced ASL courses and is also an ideal choice for those seeking careers that involve working with Deaf individuals. Please note that this program does not offer interpreter training.

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

1. Use basic conversational skills and communicate effectively using American Sign Language.

2. Communicate confidently with Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in a variety of settings.

3. Recognize that the Deaf community has its own unique set of values, rules, and traditions that differ from typical American culture.

4. Pursue advanced courses in American Sign Language and Deaf studies.
